Haven Happenings

Boating Anyone? You've heard the expression "We're in this boat together!" When the river kept rising and rising, many people could have used boats to move their belongings from their homes. Who would have ever thought the Cedar River would be as far as 11th Street West in Cedar Rapids? That's 11 city blocks from the river bank! Hopefully, we'll never see the likes of that again. On the same hand, it was history making and that made the flooding and it's aftermath impossible not to watch. And equally impossible not to do something. If you don't live in the impacted area, at a glance there are piles of trash, gutted houses and closed businesses. But take a closer look. There on the curb is someone's life. Wedding pictures, heirloom quilts, your grandpa's baseball glove from 1930. All un-replaceable, all gone. I know these things are only possessions, but imagine yourself suddenly removed from your home and never allowed to return. It's a deep hurt. Even if you didn't have water damage, you have been impacted by the flooding. Your workplace was flooded. Your church was flooded. Your bank was flooded. Your favorite shopping and eating places were flooded. Where you get your marriage license was flooded! You or your spouse travel much further for work. Your spouse is working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week doing flood repairs. Or there is no work at all. Even if it meant just taking a detour while driving, you were impacted. Now is a good time to be grateful if these things I mentioned above were your only hardships. The people who lost homes and belongings would be glad to take your place. Along with the list of people who lost jobs, homes, cars, personal treasures, we need to recognize another list of people who volunteered to remove debris, windows, and furnaces. There are people who gave money and other goods. There are people who served meals at shelters, fostered pets and washed mold from floors and walls. Cedar Rapids is a great place to live, not for the statistics reported in the news and magazine surveys, but for the people. People helping people. People sharing the boat. |
It's not exactly "Where's Waldo', but it may be hard to find business that have relocated. Here's some help! If you have a business you'd like listed here, please contact us. Village Needlework - now located on 1st Ave West - between 10th-11th Street. Entrance is in the rear of the bldg, so park in the rear parking lot off of 11th Street. Stalker Electric - Stalker's were fortunate enough to move in April to north Center Point Rd, next to Oscars Restaurant. (People might believe that they flooded and closed - not so!) ________________________________
